“*Tobacco and Adolescence*”
1. In India there are 1 million deaths/year due to smoking (fourth leading cause).
2. Nicotine releases dopamine and adrenaline giving short term pleasure but long term systemic side effects.
3. Tobacco has chemicals, long term exposure to which causes cancer.
4. Earlier the exposure-more are the chances of getting addicted.
5. 75% get exposed in school.
6. Teenagers indulge In smoking desiring thrill by taking risks esp under peer pressure.
7. Easy availability, media bombarding, low self esteem , smoking parents and neglected child are more prone.
8. Risks : Cancers ,addiction, fibrosis infertility & systemic diseases.
9. Management- communication with parents, counselling, rehabilitation ,awareness drives and REBT.

1. 69 of 7000 chemicals and compounds present in tobacco smoke causes cancer .
2. Tobacco kills 7 million people each year world wide .
3. Cigarette is one weapon that kills from both ends - direct smoking and passive smoking .
4. Second hand smoke/Side stream smoke is more toxic than main stream smoke (direct smoking ).
5. For every 8 persons who die from smoking, one person dies from second hand smoke
6. Children exposed to parents’ cigarette smoke have higher rates of ear infections, respiratory illness, and asthma attacks.
7. No amount of second hand smoke is safe, even brief exposure can be harmful to health .
8. Passive smoking can cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Low birth weight .
9. Children born to women non smokers who are exposed to second hand smoke during pregnancy or women who smoked during pregnancy are l likely to suffer from ADHD and Conduct disorders.
10. Environmental tobacco smoke ( ETS ) is a major preventable cause of cardiovascular disease and Stroke .
11. Passive smoking can cause allergic diseases
12. Air purifiers and air fresheners do NOT remove the toxic effect.
13. Opening windows and using fans doesn't completely remove second hand smoke.
14. Tobacco smoke travels from its point of generation in a building to all other areas of the building .
15. Tobacco makes the lungs of a person more vulnerable to COVID -19 .
