MYTHS AND FACTS OF MEDICAL PRACTICE

*MYTH 1.*
MEDICAL PROFESSION IS A NOBLE PROFESSION

*FACT.*
EVERY PROFESSION, WHETHER OF A TEACHER, SOLDIER, TAILOR OR SHOPKEEPER, IS NOBLE, IF DONE WITH SINCERITY AND INTEGRITY.

A CARELESS DOCTOR CAN KILL ONE, A CARELESS TRAIN DRIVER CAN KILL DOZENS.

*MYTH 2.*
AS IT IS A SERVICE TO HUMANITY, DOCTORS SHOULD NOT RUN AFTER MONEY.

*FACT.*
MONEY IS AN IMPORTANT MEASURE OF SUCCESS. RUNNING AFTER IT IS NOT GOOD FOR ANYBODY, BUT EARNING MORE MONEY BY DOING MORE WORK IS NOT A MORAL CRIME.

*MYTH 3.*
DOCTORS MUST BE HUNDRED PERCENT HONEST.

*FACT.*
DOCTORS DO NOT COME FROM MARS. IF SUPREME COURT JUDGES OR ARMY GENERALS CAN BE CORRUPT, SO CAN A FEW DOCTORS.

AS A CLASS, THEY ARE STILL FAR BETTER THAN POLITICIANS, BUREAUCRATS, LAWYERS, POLICE OR PSU ENGINEERS.

*MYTH 4.*
MOST OF THE TIME, DOCTORS DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE DISEASE AND WRITE UNNECESAARY AND COSTLY DRUGS, AND ADVISE TESTS AND TREAT ON A TRIAL BASIS.

*FACT.*
DOCTOR PATIENT RELATIONSHIP IS BASED ON TRUST, IF YOU DO NOT TRUST YOUR DOCTOR, GO TO ANOTHER ONE.

MEDICAL SCIENCE IS A LIFE LONG LEARNING PROCESS, AND ALL TREATMENT, TO SOME EXTENT IS BASED ON TRIAL AND ERROR.

THE SAME MEDICINE, WHICH WORKS FOR ONE PATIENT MAY NOT WORK ON ANOTHER.

SECONDLY, THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROVIDING QUALITY DRUGS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES LIES NOT WITH THE DOCTOR, BUT WITH THE STATE AUTHORITIES, JUST LIKE PROVIDING FOR BETTER ROADS, UNADULTERATED QUALITY FOOD AND DAIRY PRODUCTS, UNINTERRUPTED POWER AND WATER SUPPLY ETC, ETC.

LIKE CLOTHES, CARS AND MOBILE PHONES, COSTLY DRUGS ARE GENERALLY BETTER THAN CHEAP ONES. HOWEVER, IF THE GOVERNMENT MAKES IT MANDATORY TO WRITE GENERICS, IT SHOULD ENSURE QUALITY, AND THE CONSEQUENCE OF POOR/NON  EFFICACY SHOULD NOT BE BLAMED ON DOCTORS.

THIRD, TESTS ARE DONE FOR PATIENT’S OWN SAFETY.

JUST LIKE WEARING A HELMET OR SEAT BELT, INVESTIGATIONS INCREASE THE SAFETY.

MOST OF THE DOCTORS IN INDIA ARE TRAINED TO WORK ON CLINICAL HUNCH AND COMMON SENSE AND NOT RELY TOO MUCH ON TESTS, AND ADVISE MUCH LESS TESTS THAN WHAT IS ACTUALLY WRITEN IN THE BOOK OR DONE IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD.

*MYTH 5.*
TREAMENT COSTS ARE INCREASING IRRATIONALLY.

*FACT.*
COMPARED TO WESTERN WORLD, TREATMENT COSTS IN INDIA ARE STILL VERY LOW, AND MANY FORIEGNERS ARE COMING HERE FOR THIS REASON.

AND IT WOULD BE WORTHWHILE TO THINK ABOUT ANY OTHER SERVICE OR PRODUCT WITH AS RAPID ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT AS MEDICAL SCIENCE, WHOSE COST IS NOT INCREASING

*MYTH 6.*
DOCTORS ARE NEXT TO GOD

*FACT.*
DOCTORS ARE AS HUMAN AS ANYONE CAN BE.

THEY ALSO FALL SICK, HAVE FAMILY COMMITMENTS, GET UPSET AND STRESSED SOMETIMES AND CAN SUFFER FROM ALL THE FRAILTIES OF A HUMAN BEING!

Life

This one is long but worth reading.

Roots

In two independent houses, separated by a compound two people were living, in one a retired person and in the other a techie.

They had planted identical saplings on either sides of the compound.

The techie used to give lot of water and manure to the plants. The retired, just small quantity of water and little manure.

The techies plant grew into lush green, leafy robust plant. The retired person's plant was a near normal but much luxuriant than his neighbour’s.

One night there was a heavy rain with gusty wind. Next morning both came out to see the fate of the plants.  To techie's surprise his plant had got uprooted where as his neighbour’s was unharmed.

Techie asks the retired as why his plant was uprooted despite such a good care where as the neighbour had hardly cared.

The retired person's answer should be a lesson for all of us.

Look young man, you had supplied everything a plant would need, in abundance and the plant did not have to go in search of it. Your roots did not have go down. I was supplying just enough to keep it alive. For the rest roots had to go down into the ground to fulfil its needs.

Since your roots were superficial the rain and wind could easily fell it. Since my roots were pretty deeply grounded they could withstand the onslaught of the nature.

The same applies to your children too.

10 TIPS TO SIMPLIFY OUR LIFE

Over the last decade, life has consistently been enriched because of more and more facilities, on-going gadgets inventions and day by day increment in luxuries. This is quite exciting however during the same period of time, people have increased their love for materialistic things abruptly which has directly or indirectly reduced their overall happiness index. Now a days, we have more luxuries but less delights and high stress levels. We have more sugar, blood and heart patients then it used to be a decade back. The reason for all the stress and anxiety is simple that we are not living a simple life.

Below are some tips which can simplify your life and may amplify the happiness scale of your life.

1- Avoid getting influenced: You don't have to follow every single trend in society. If your friend has purchased a new BMW, you don't need to buy a Mercedes to impress. Live for yourself not for others. If you purchase a high-end luxury car today, your love for this will end soon and you will be selling it at considerable financial loss though I am not forbidding to purchase luxury things once in a considerable duration of time.

2- Avoid impulse buying: You don't need to buy every single gadget instantly which you like in this shop. Do your Needs Vs Wants analysis. Buy only if it is really increasing your peace of mind. Remember that now a days the standard life of every gadget (phone, tablet, laptop, jewelry etc) is more or less 6 months because of new and new products release by several companies.

3- The 6 months Rule: Generally speaking, anything which has not been used in last 6 months will not be used in next 6 months most likely. Give such things (shoes, garments, toys, mobiles, house hold items) in charity. This will help spreading happiness in society and reducing your space at home.

4- Avoid Credit Cards Usage: Avoid this as much as you can. Debt is a silent stress and eating up your mental health slowly. Your brain might get old while you are young at heart. You might develop high BP or sugar because of stress due to credit. Live a credit-free life.

5- Learn to say No: Don't accept every single attractive offer from the bank representative or a car loan company. Do your "Needs Vs Wants" analysis. Careful spending is always recommended.

6- Reduce too much social gatherings: Stay at home. Spend quality time with your spouse and kids for empowered relationships. You don't have to say yes every time to your friend who is coming to pick you from home to join another late night social get together.

7- Reduce your love for money: Careful spending and saving is important but don't allow your brain to keep doing the calculations all day long. You love for money is pulling your brain strings and damaging your peace of mind silently. Stay away from too much thoughts about your financials.

8- Less TV more Books: It is proven that people who watch more movies generate high level of stress. Read quality books to learn wisdom and attain high degree of happiness.

9- Spend time with Nature: Instead of going to cinemas and malls repeatedly, spend time in parks. This will relax your brain, body and soul.

10- Change your eating habits: why eating lavish foods by visiting costly restaurants again and again in a week. The purpose of food is to fill your belly for some hours. So the suggestion here is to go for simpler and healthier food. Remember, most of the food items in the market are fried which are increasing your cholesterol level silently hence making you a heart patient in the long run!

Work on your real wealth and live a happy life.

Difficult times

We all have times when life feels hard, when we’re frustrated and tired and just want to hide away. If that’s you right now, don’t worry – every caterpillar has to rest to become a butterfly and you’ll soon find your wings again. In the mean time, let your Angels wrap you in theirs. You are so loved.

Walk and walk

Why walk is necessary ?

Ever wondered what happens to your body when you start walking?

Here's a minute-by   -minute rundown of the amazing chain reaction walking and exercise has upon your body, it's truly amazing!

Minutes 1 to 5

Your first few steps trigger the release of energy-producing chemicals in your cells to fuel your walk. Your heart rate revs-up from about 70 to 100 beats per minute (bpm), boosting blood-flow and warming muscles.

Any stiffness subsides as joints release lubricating fluid to help you move more easily. As you get moving, your body burns 5 calories per minute, compared with only 1 per minute at rest. Your body needs more fuel and starts pulling from its carbohydrates and fat stores.

Minutes 6 to 10

Heartbeat increases and you're burning up to 6 calories a minute as you pick up the pace. A slight rise in blood pressure is countered by the release of chemicals that expand blood vessels, bringing more blood and oxygen to working muscles.

Minutes 11 to 20

Your body temperature keeps rising, and you start to perspire as blood vessels near the skin expand to release heat. As your walk becomes brisker, you'll be burning up to 7 calories a minute and breathing harder. Hormones such as epinephrine and glucagon rise to release fuel to the muscles.

Minutes 21 to 45

Feeling invigorated, you start to relax as your body releases tension, thanks in part to a dose of feel-good chemicals such as endorphins in your brain. As more fat is burned, insulin (which helps store fat) drops--excellent news for anyone battling excess weight or diabetes.

Minutes 46 to 60

Your muscles may feel fatigued as carbohydrates stores are reduced. As you cool down, your heart rate decreases and your breathing slows. You'll be burning fewer calories but more than you were before you started. Your calorie burn will remain elevated for up to 1 hour.

All this happens without a single conscious thought from us - the human body is amazing.

Stay blessed -Stayfit
Walk / Exercise

Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar

*Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar*

I was waiting in line for a ride at the airport in Dubai. When a cab pulled up, the first thing I noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for me.

He handed me a laminated card and said: 'I'm Abdul, your driver. While I'm loading your bags in the trunk I'd like you to read my mission statement.'

Taken aback, I read the card. It said: Abdul's Mission Statement:
To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest and cheapest way possible in a friendly environment.

This blew me away. Especially when I noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!

As he slid behind the wheel, Abdul said, 'Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf.'

I said jokingly, 'No, I'd prefer a soft drink.'

Abdul smiled and said, 'No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, lassi, water and orange juice.'

Almost stuttering, I said, 'I'll take a Lassi.'

Handing me my drink, Abdul said, 'If you'd like something to read, I have The NST , Star and Sun Today.'

As they were pulling away, Abdul handed me another laminated card, 'These are the stations I get and the music they play, if you'd like to listen to the radio.'

And as if that weren't enough, Abdul told me that he had the air conditioning on and asked if the temperature was comfortable for me.

Then he advised me of the best route to my destination for that time of day. He also let me know that he'd be happy to chat and tell me about some of the sights or, if I preferred, to leave me with my own thoughts.

'Tell me, Abdul ,' I was amazed and asked him, 'have you always served customers like this?'

Abdul smiled into the rear view mirror. "No, not always. In fact, it's only been in the last two years. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard about POWER OF CHOICE one day."

Power of choice is that you can be a duck or an eagle.

'If you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you'll rarely disappoint yourself. Stop complaining!'

'Don't be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.'

'That hit me. really hard' said Abdul.

'It is about me. I was always quacking and complaining, so I decided to change my attitude and become an eagle. I looked around at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty, the drivers were unfriendly, and the customers were unhappy. So I decided to make some changes, slowly ... a few at a time. When my customers responded well, I did more.'

'I take it that it has paid off for you,' I said.

'It sure has,' Abdul replied. 'My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year I'll probably quadruple it. My customers call me for appointments on my cell phone or leave a message on it.'

Abdul made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like a duck and start soaring like an eagle.

Start becoming an eagle today ... one small step every week..next week... And next...And....

A great Thought..

"You don't die if you fall in water, you die only if you don't swim.

Thats the Real Meaning of Life.

Improve yourself and your skills in a different way.
Be an eagle. .not a Duck.

Rearing children

*I just read this story on how a daughter was raised and decided to share.*

My Dad always *sounds* it in my ears "Simi, you must be *tough.* Being *girlish* and being *ladylike* is not an excuse for *weakness".* This he still says to all of us.

All the children were *raised* to do the *"masculine"* as well as the *"feminine"* tasks.

My sisters and I started *winding* a 15KVA generator as soon as we got one. I *learnt* how to wash a *car* (internal and external) before the *age of 16*.

I started *learning driving* immediately after *secondary* school. My Dad told me that before he allows me drive out *independently,* that I must learn to change *car tyres.*

I remember I was forming *ajebutter* and my Dad said to me "If you are *driving* on a lonely *highway* and you need to change your *tyre*, what would you do? You will have to get down and change it.... that's the *common sense* thing to do. It's a *survival skill* for drivers.

*My brother?*
He started *washing* the dishes as soon as he could reach the sink and *handle* the dishes.

He started cooking *simple meals* before the *age of 10.* He started *washing* his socks and under wears before the *age of 7.*

He started *handling his laundry* before the *age of 11*, when he had to go to *boarding* school.

In my house, the rule was (still is) that *anyone who eats* must be able to get *involved in the kitchen*, when required.

My father tells me I can be *president,* not *first lady.* There is nothing wrong with being a first lady, but there's also nothing wrong with being the *husband* of the president.

Thus, if you tell your *son* that he can be president, you should also tell your *daughter* that she can be president.

The *hidden but significant psychology* behind this is that telling your daughter that she can be president pushes her to be *great,*

*_while telling her that she can be a_*
*first lady*
pushes her to aspire to marry a *great man,*
and probably *reduces* the needed inspiration to aspire to exercise her maximum potentials.

We need not *teach our girls* to believe that the best they can be is to *exist under the success of a man,* their husbands.

It is *disfavor* to *humanity* to raise your son with the *impression* that he is better than other females..

Raise your daughters to understand that they are not *inferior to males.*

Teach your sons to be as *domesticated* as your daughters,
_and push your daughters
to_
*attain financial independence*
as much as you push your sons.

This way, we will raise a *less entitled*:
and *more responsible* generation,
*equipped* with all vital survival skills,
and with less *handicaps.*

*Charity* begins at *home*, not in the *offices* or *work places.*
AND

*#Equality_Begins_At_Home*

Go tell it to the *world*, over the hills and everywhere

Depression, easy to treat but needs treatment

Very apt on World Depression Day*

By Ninad Vengurlekar

I was pained to read about the suicide of the depressed kid who killed himself by jumping off a hotel building. In the world of social media, he assumed that everyone except him is doing exceedingly well for themselves and he is the only loser on earth. He probably posted about his suicide on social media hoping to taste some success and become famous. He longed for success, but had to kill himself for it. Sadly, he did not live to see how famous he has become.

I was moved by the news. In a life connected to smartphones, I believe youngsters need a reality check about what real life is, what success is, and how it can be achieved. What happens on social media is virtual, but what you do with your life is real. Moving your fingers is far easier than rolling up your sleeves and getting to work. This difference needs to be understood.

When youngsters are depressed and feel suicidal, they are thinking of their life in short term. They believe that their life is going to end up being what it is today - forever. But that is far from truth. When you are depressed at 20, you forget that you will be alive for the next 60 years. If you lose 2 years to depression - what the heck! You still have 58 years to resurrect yourself.

Here are 4 examples that come to my mind of people who resurrected themselves out of failure -

Remember the guy who was slapped by people on a railway station for picking Sunil Dutt's wallet in Munnabhai MBBS? That was Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Nawaz graduated from NSD and was forced to work as a cook and a security guard because he had no work and no money. How many of you are willing to do that as a part of your struggle to succeed? Did he feel depressed about it then? So what did he do? And where is he today?

Nawaaz kept trying. Trying hard. Finally a casting director suggested his name to Sujoy Ghosh, who was directing Kahaani. Sujoy himself was battling 2 flops while making Kahaani. He offered Nawaz an important role of an IB official. Nawaaz got a small opportunity to make it big in Bollywood. After years of failure, he precisely knew what that small opening could do for his career.  And boy did he deliver? For his role in Kahaani, Nawaaz walked away with a National Award. That was the beginning. Today he is perhaps the rare few actors in Bollywood who has worked with all the three Khans in a span of 3 years. He makes crores and lives like a King. Failure was the foundation of Nawaz's success.

In 2007 World Cup, when India was knocked out of the WC Qualifiers, Sachin Tendulkar cried in the dressing room. He announced to many of his fellow cricketers that he wants to retire. Sachin lost his nerve when faced with such a colossal failure, for the first time in his life. He probably feared coming back to India and facing his fans, friends, and family.

Vivian Richards got to know about Sachin's state of mind. He called and spoke to him for 1 hour. An invigorated Sachin went back to his rigorous training. In the next 5 years, he reached 100 centuries, became the highest run getter in Test and ODIs, won the World Cup and had millions of people crying for him when he retired at Wankhede. He got a send-off no cricketer has ever had in the history of the game. He became a legend because he refused to bow down to failure. A chat with someone who Sachin respected and idolised, turned around his career and life.

Tony Hseih was 24, when he made $265 million selling his startup to Microsoft. He lived like a king and blew up all his money on parties, houses, cars and bad investments. He lost everything. One day with no money in his pockets, he was literally on the roads. That night he met a guy who told him about an idea of selling shoes online. Who buys shoes online???

A bankrupt Tony Hseih loved the idea, took a loan, and invested in the startup. They called it Zappos. Less than a decade later, Hseih sold the company for 1.2 billion dollars to Amazon. From $265 million to bankruptcy to $1.2 billion. He later wrote a book called Delivering Happiness and divided it into 3 chapters - Profits, Passion and Purpose. That is the sequence in which he discovered himself in life. Hseih proves that no money is not the end of life. It is a state of life from where the only way you go is up.

As a struggler, music director Naushad slept on the footpath opposite Broadway cinema. 16 years later he stood there for the premiere of his movie Baiju Bawara. Tears started flowing from his eyes as he saw the footpath that he slept on, from the other side. When asked why he was crying, a weeping Naushad said, "I can't believe it took me 16 years to cross this road." Persistence ultimately paid, even if it took 16 years.

Did these guys ever feel depressed? Probably they did. Did they cry over it? Yes. People cry when they fail. They feel anxious, lonely and sad. But did they continue to sit back and do nothing about it? They didn't. They picked up the pieces and stood up again. They refused to believe that because they failed now, they are destined to fail forever. They fought back hard until the time destiny could no longer influence their future. And because they did, they ended up writing  their future the way they wanted it to be.

The point is life does not stop with failure. There is no successful person on earth who has not seen failure or been depressed about it. The journey to success begins with failure. Therefore they say, failure is the best teacher. Because it teaches you what not to do, so that you can focus on what to do.

Failure happens because each one of us are different, and life offers several opportunities for us to discover our personal formula of success. Which is why they say there is no magic formula for success. You have to earn it the hard way. Nobody else can do it for you. The problem is many of us are not ready for a long haul. We give up.

Why does failure make you feel depressed? Because depression is a outcome of thinking about the past. Anxiety is an outcome or predicting the future before it has happened. Between depression and anxiety lies enlightenment. Enlightenment is living in the present, in the moment. A slight imbalance in your mind makes you either depressed or anxious.

When you fail, you either sink yourself in excuses of what went wrong or fear an uncertain future. You seldom focus on the present. Some people are busy in this vicious cycle for decades. They do not want to bust their ass and achieve their dreams. They want to dream and hope that someone else will make it happen for them. That someone never comes in their lives. Because luck deserts the lazy, and favours the industrious.

Success is a sum total of a string of failures. Failure is the shortcut to success.

For those who are active, busy and passionate, where is the time for depression and anxiety? Except clinical causes, most depression and anxiety are diseases caused by an empty brain and an inactive body. Sitting on a smartphone and imagining life cannot help you achieve your dreams. They die once the smartphone is switched off. You can go to a doctor and get treated, but the most powerful treatment for depression and anxiety is an active life that stretches your mind and body. Your life needs a purpose. Purpose builds Passion. And Passion leads to Profits. So throw away your smartphone if it is a distraction.

The first step to become successful is to make a plan to bust your ass. Start your day at 6 am. Go for a run or a swim. Sweat for an hour. Let your brain cells get activated with freshly oxygenated blood. Come home and have an hearty breakfast. If you are unemployed, don't waste time sitting at home. Go to your father's friend and work for free. Get yourself an internship. Most internships lead to jobs. If you can't find an internship then go do volunteering. If volunteering does not interest you then do some research in your field of activity.

Keep yourself busy. Get out of the house. Make new friends, meet old friends. Before you sleep, do a 10-20 minute pranayama session. The best cure for depression and anxiety is deep sleep. Next morning get your ass up and repeat. Do this every single day until these mental diseases tire themselves out inside you. They will. One day you will realise that you are free. And then nobody can hold you back. Trust me on this.

You may ask, how do I know all this? Like millions others in the world, I have lived through this mess myself for a while. We all do. It was not serious, but it would have been had I not acted upon it. Doctors did not save me. I did. And I have mentioned the formula up there. It is simple actually. Don't give up.

You can cry, you can weep, you can be scared and you can lose sleep. That's all ok and acceptable. But don't give up. Losing the battle in the mind is more dangerous than losing a war on the battlefield. Never forget that. War heroes are never asked whether they won or lost in a battle. People forget the result. They celebrate their bravery.

So get your ass up. Face your fears first. Once you know what your problems are can you work towards solving them. And please take help. Call people who you believe have gone through failures and emerged successful. They will help you. People love helping others. But you need to ask for help. Never fear a No. Some people may not help, others will. Forget those who didn't. Focus on those who do.

Sant Tukaram said - "याजसाठी केला होता अट्टहास, शेवटचा दिस गोड व्हावा"
(I endured all the struggles of life in the hope that my last day would be the happiest of all.) One of the greatest spiritual saints of the world has concluded that struggle is the secret of a happy life. Who are we to debate this reality? :)

#depression #anxiety

9 things you should never tell a patient under treatment for depression:

*Nothing is wrong with you!*

This is devastating for a patient. Just because all the physical tests are normal would not mean that everything is ok. M.R.I scans do not detect depression. Physiological changes in the brain are not detected by the scans and blood tests.Moods can be assessed by psychologial tests.
